How to adjust Headset Mic volume on Nortel t7316e phone ...

Our cleints who we call are complaining about the volume level of the person speaking with the headset. We are not using an amplifier however we have been told it doesn't effect the Mic volume level. I also have tried with an m12 amplifier and it also doesn't seem to make a difference. Can any one confirm that they have encountered issues with the Mic volume with headsets and know of a solution.
I am using a T7316e phone with a Plantronics headset with a direct cable connection to the headset jack on the phone.
I also can across one topic which mentions it is a know issue for the "T" series of digital phones. Can anyone add some additional information on the topic.
