When Google demonstrated the upcoming Google Wallet app at I/O 2011 on its Nexus S phone, there was little doubt that NFC payment support would be part of the package. Lo and behold, the demonstration featured a payment made by simply tapping the phone to a base unit connected to a point-of-sale computer.
Wallet is still being tested, however, and there’s really only one smartphone in the U.S. with NFC support at the moment (the Nexus S). That gives competitors time to match Google’s move, and PayPal has announced today that it’s up to the challenge.
